Waterwheel Village
Nearly a century ago, beside a peaceful river in northern Finland, a dream took root: a mill to power a better life. Due to the Great Depression, the mill did not turn. Today, here in Mr. McArthur's world, it lives again — rebuilt by refugees, artisans, teachers and farmers from every corner of the world. Learn English as you become part of their story.

In your letter of 13 May 1929, your society asked whether we could grant credit to your society for the Ruokojoki Sawmill and Mill Cooperative. We must inform you that we have no special credit for enterprises of this kind, and because of the current financial situation, it has generally not been possible to grant loans to such new enterprises. The final decision, however, rests with the board of the Central Lending Fund. Should you wish to apply for a loan on these terms, the following documents must be sent to us so that we can present the matter to our board:
- A copy of the rules of the sawmill and mill cooperative.
- An extract from the minutes of the cooperative meeting at which it decided to take the loan, and on its securities.
- A cost estimate for building the sawmill and mill with their machinery.
- Last year's financial statement, if the business was already operating then.
- A profitability calculation for the business.
